My class in the field had a great time listening to " The Pilgrims First Thanksgiving" by Ann McGovern. We talked about pilgrims and why they migrated here. We also talked about the tradition of Thanksgiving. They wrote the main idea and key details that happened in the read aloud. They then wrote what they did on Thanksgiving.

Artifacts!
Have you ever thought about what you would leave behind when you're gone? Our methods class got together and brought the things we thought would represent us when we were gone. It was surprising to see so little technology in our artifacts since technology seems to be such a big part of our lives.
Geographic Garble!
We had a great time in our Social Studies methods class working with Geographic Garble! This can be a great activity with students to learn new facts and play a fun game.
( Kansas, Tennessee, Iowa, Rhode Island)
Masks and different Cultures
Students in my field had the opportunity to create their own mask and then discuss where the masks came from. They talked about the different cultures and what the masks meant in that culture. They also talked about where these different tribes were located in the world.
Maps!
I had the opportunity to do a read aloud about animals with my students and then talk about where these animals lived in the world. I incorporated a map lesson in with the Language Arts. Students learned to locate the North Pole, South Pole, Equator, and United States. They then had pictures of the animals from the read aloud and pasted them to the places they lived on the map.
Salt Dough Maps
Salt Dough Maps are a great way to integrate Social Students and Art. Students were assigned a type of map they were to create. Some mays included water ways, some maps had the goods produced in Indiana, while others labeled major highways.
Why do people Migrate?
A class in my field observation answered a "big question", Why do people migrate? Each student chose an immigrant and wrote facts about them as well as why they chose to migrate. Again, a great way to bring Social Studies together with Language Arts.
Thematic Unit: Ocean Animals
In my field observation class my students are learning about ocean animals. They had a great time decorating the walls with an ocean mural. Each student in the class was assigned an ocean animal and then required to research their animals and write down facts about their animals, including where they live. This activity was a great way to incorporate Science and Social Studies with Language Arts.
Scuba Steve!!
Another class learned all about the Desert and did their own mural!

Drumming
Drumming in art methods! This activity was very difficult for me. I had a hard time keeping the beat with all the other people playing their drums too. We also had a very hard time coming up with a song to play on our drums. Can you guess the two songs we chose?
Act it Out!
Theatre is such a great tool to get students engaged in their Language Arts, as well as a great opportunity to tie in Art! We were given the opportunity to work in groups to act out "Wolf in the Hood". It was so fun to see everyone ( adults) involved and participating in what is otherwise a silly thing!
Tie Dye!
Tie dyeing is such a fun activity! It is a great way to get children up and out of their seats and interacting with other students. This can be a great art activity and give children the chance to create something they can actually use!
Dance Dance!
Our wonderful instructor managed to get us up and out of our seats for a little Salsa and Bachata lesson! We had the pleasure of learning a little in the field of dance. We even had a few great laughs during the process, but amongst all the fun we also gained some new knowledge. We talked about different ways this applies to class and how it can be used during instruction and a school day.
Create a Masterpiece!
Our class was given they assignment of creating a "masterpiece". We could use any medium, any color, any texture, etc. We were just told to create a master piece. After we were done we then had to explain our masterpiece. It was great to see everyone's different ideas, thoughts, and feelings about what a masterpiece is and what it means to them. Some people chose for their masterpiece to have meaning, some just created their masterpiece based on their interpretation of beauty. There were so many different ideas and creations. This can be a great activity in a number of ways from getting to know your students to finding out how students interpret instructions and ideas differently.
My Masterpiece In The Making
Cabin Days!
Cabin days is such a great experience for all ages. This small field trip can help give students an insight to what life was like during that time period. This activity can bring about questions such as: How did people survive without technology? How did they prepare their food? Where did they sleep? How did they survive without indoor plumbing? etc. They can also experience different occupations that were present during this time period. This hands-on activity would be great for students. It would also give the student the opportunity to relate and compare their lives to what it might be like during those times.
