My class in the field had a great time listening to " The Pilgrims First Thanksgiving" by Ann McGovern. We talked about pilgrims and why they migrated here. We also talked about the tradition of Thanksgiving. They wrote the main idea and key details that happened in the read aloud. They then wrote what they did on Thanksgiving.

Artifacts!
Have you ever thought about what you would leave behind when you're gone? Our methods class got together and brought the things we thought would represent us when we were gone. It was surprising to see so little technology in our artifacts since technology seems to be such a big part of our lives.
Geographic Garble!
We had a great time in our Social Studies methods class working with Geographic Garble! This can be a great activity with students to learn new facts and play a fun game.

Masks and different Cultures
Students in my field had the opportunity to create their own mask and then discuss where the masks came from. They talked about the different cultures and what the masks meant in that culture. They also talked about where these different tribes were located in the world.
Maps!
I had the opportunity to do a read aloud about animals with my students and then talk about where these animals lived in the world. I incorporated a map lesson in with the Language Arts. Students learned to locate the North Pole, South Pole, Equator, and United States. They then had pictures of the animals from the read aloud and pasted them to the places they lived on the map.
Salt Dough Maps
Salt Dough Maps are a great way to integrate Social Students and Art. Students were assigned a type of map they were to create. Some mays included water ways, some maps had the goods produced in Indiana, while others labeled major highways.
Why do people Migrate?
A class in my field observation answered a "big question", Why do people migrate? Each student chose an immigrant and wrote facts about them as well as why they chose to migrate. Again, a great way to bring Social Studies together with Language Arts.
